Howard Ruan

Howard (they, them) is a born-and-raised Chicagoan from the southwest side, a practitioner of music, the written word, and zazen or Zen meditation. After receiving a BA in Humanities (with a focus on philosophy) from the once-independent Shimer College, Howard worked at a non-profit organization providing literacy programs for children and youth in Chicago Public Schools. Since 2017, Howard has been pursuing an AM/MDiv joint-degree program at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration and the Divinity School, focusing on the intersections of religious studies, spiritual care, and social justice. They are also a lay-ordained Soto Zen Buddhist whose home, Sangha, or community is Ancient Dragon Zen Gate. Howard is new to working with LGBTQI+ youth and brings clinical experience ranging from hospital chaplaincy, case management, and religious leadership to their engagements with YEPP members..
