Max Lubbers

Max (they/he) grew up on the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, then attended Northwestern University as a first-generation college student. There, they earned a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Gender and Sexuality Studies. In Chicago, he has worked as a journalist for newsrooms like Windy City Times, WBEZ, Injustice Watch and Chalkbeat Chicago. Across their work, Max directs their energy toward people who the media typically excludes, engaging them in the storytelling process. In particular, he has focused on LGBTQIA+ communities, people experiencing incarceration and homelessness, and immigrant communities.

Max also holds a deep commitment to teaching. His first job was leading figure skating lessons for youth. In college, they developed a podcasting curriculum for students and newspaper staff. Now, he is excited to bridge all these passions at YEPP leading podcast production workshops with youth and supports services through the Community Drop-In Arts Program.
